LOCATION – Wankhede Stadium, Mumba
MI arrives in the event at the tail end of the league after winning 4 of their previous 5 games. MI got off to a fast start as Hardik Pandya ordered them to bat first. The middle order had a fantastic chance to shine after scoring 61 runs without losing a wicket. Ishan Kishan played a key role in the first six while Rohit Sharma, the skipper, was able to accumulate some runs. But as Suryakumar Yadav let loose the beast inside, the assault started. SKY attacked the enemy on its own despite losing allies at the opposite end. He reached his first IPL 100 after playing some breath-taking shots to every area of the pitch. The only bowler to pose difficulties for the MI hitters was Rashid Khan, who picked up four wickets. After losing 3 wickets in the powerplay, chasing 219 was never going to be simple. The MI spinners continued to contribute with wickets, and the GT middle order was unable to keep up with the rising asking rate. Rashid Khan had other ideas, though, and Mumbai was on track for a significant victory. The Afghan All-Rounder suddenly took the initiative and led his own counterattack. Khan scored 79 runs off just 32 balls while hitting 10 maximums and three fours. The best bowler for MI, scooping up 3 wickets for only 31 runs, was Akash Madhwal. In the end, GT fell short by 27 runs.
Player of the Game is Suryakumar Yadav.
Suryakumar Yadav said “It’s true that this was one of my better T20 innings, you can say that. Every time I score a run, the team ought to triumph. The most significant thing is that we batted first today and promised to maintain the same pace when pursuing 200–220. I knew what strokes to play on the wicket since there was a lot of dew on the ground; I wasn’t thinking about hitting straight; instead, I had two shots in mind: one over the third man and one over fine leg. I practise them in advance of the game so that when I enter it, I am extremely clear and only need to go express myself“.
